What is it?
Periimplantitis is an inflammatory condition affecting the gum and bone around a dental implant, similar to gum disease around a natural tooth. Left untreated, it can lead to bone loss around the implant and threaten its long-term stability.
What causes it?
Bacterial plaque accumulating around the implant is the main cause, with risk increased by inconsistent oral hygiene, smoking, a history of gum disease, and residual cement left behind after the crown was fitted.
Types of treatment
- Non-surgical management
- Decontamination of the implant surface and reinforced hygiene to control early inflammation.
- Surgical management
- Access surgery and, where needed, regenerative treatment to address bone loss around the implant.
